Parenting Difficulties: The Importance of “Me” Time

Even though it’s difficult from time to time, being a dad is probably the best thing that can happen to any guy who actually wants kids. And yes, you love your children more than life itself, and you want to spend every second with them, but every dad needs some alone time to refresh his batteries. This is not selfish at all, and it definitely doesn’t mean skipping on your responsibilities – if you really want to be the best dad ever, sometimes, it’s very important to take a well-deserved break. If you’re not sure about how or why you should do this, take a look at the following list.

1. Spend time with your friends

In order not to lose touch with the actual world, and most importantly, not to lose touch with your friends, it’s very important to take some time off and head off somewhere with your friends. Since you’re a dad now and you have certain interests and responsibilities, it would be best to spend time with your friends who are dads as well. Not only will you blow off some steam by talking to them about the things that don’t concern your family but you will also probably mention different methods that you use in bringing up your little ones, and thus perhaps come up with some new and exciting ideas that your child will like. It’s very good for your mental health to spend some time talking to adults only, without having to watch over the kids and talk in a baby voice, and that is why spending time with your mates is very important.

2. Stay active

Having the job of a father requires staying active 24/7, but you definitely need to stay active in different ways as well. Lifting your child up and down or running behind them is satisfying, but you really need to let yourself break a sweat from time to time, and that is why working out would be an ideal solution. It can require only three hours a week, but those three hours can really do magic to your well-being. You can opt for working out with a fitness trainer so that you see results in no time, which will definitely boost your confidence in all the segments of your life. If running is something that gets you relaxed and makes you think of nothing for about an hour, feel free to do it. Sometimes, it’s good to be selfish as it can do great things for you, and you can certainly find someone to keep your child occupied while you’re exercising!

3. Read

If you, however, feel that you have enough physical activity throughout the day and you feel like just sitting back and relaxing, a book can be an excellent choice. Indulging in any book that you want to read can also help your brain function properly afterwards. However, since you really want some “me” time, avoid any parenting books for now – opt for business books, fiction, even something trashy. It’s said that around 20% of men suffer from depression after having children, and reading something light from time to time, or embracing other relaxing activities can really help you not contribute to the increase of this percentage. Reading at least half an hour every night after your child falls asleep is great, and you can definitely find time for that if you just want it very much.

4. Take a relaxing bath

Perhaps all these tips are easier said than done, and if you really cannot find time to spend alone somewhere outside your house, it doesn’t matter, as there are plenty of things you can do for yourself in the comfort of your own home. If you’re not the reading type, however, you just need to find something else. And that’s where a relaxing bath comes in. First of all, leave the prejudices aside; relaxing baths are not for women only. After you put your child to sleep, hit the bathroom and make yourself a nice and cozy bath, get a glass of wine or whiskey and just – relax.

5. Embrace your creativity

Even though all of the tips above will provide you with the much-needed “me” time, embracing your creativity can be the most rewarding process of all. If you’re an artist, you need to find time to work on your talent and not let it linger there in you. Go with drawing, writing, doing arts and crafts – whatever rocks your boat!

At the end of the day, you will probably find yourself wondering how the time passed so quickly and you hadn’t managed to do anything for yourself. Those things happen, as being a father is certainly as challenging as it is rewarding. If you really want some “me” time, make sure to organize your time properly – and then you will be able to do whatever you want for at least an hour a day!

Giving yourself your ME time is extremely important since it helps refresh your batteries and get ready for the upcoming challenges. I usually prefer running and going out with friends. It works great for me.
